AGE: 70 years old
SPECIAL NEED: non-verbal with advanced dementia
MEDICAL HISTORY: Gilbert’s syndrome
CHIEF COMPLAINT: No longer able to cooperate for dental cleanings in the traditional office setting
MAINTENANCE CARE: RDHAP (mobile hygienist)
BACKGROUND: Paula was referred to the Blende Dental Group by a family-member, who is a dentist, when she was no longer able to cooperate for dental work in the traditional office setting. Rather than remove all of Paula’s teeth, her family chose to preserve her teeth and maintain her ability to enjoy food.
CLINICAL FINDINGS:
Constant, audible bruxism with significant attrition
Localized moderate chronic periodontitis
Dental caries
Multiple non-restorable teeth
DENTAL MEDICAL TEAM:
Dentist: David Blende, D.D.S.
Oral Surgeon: Juan Luque, D.D.S., M.D.
Dental Lab: Dental Concepts
TREATMENT SUMMARY:
Extraction of six teeth (#2, 4, 14, 15, 21, 31)
Composite restorations on two teeth (#23, 27)
Eleven crowns (#6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 28, 29, 30)
Two bridges (#3-5, 20-22)
Scaling and root planing (two quadrants).
TREATMENT DETAILS: Metal occlusals / incisals were features that were designed into the crowns and bridges to preserve the restorations despite Paula’s constant bruxism. The work was completed in two visits (preparations and seats) under general anesthesia at California Pacific Medical Center.
